Major Technical Writing Assignment 3: Critical Parody
Your mission is to contrive a critical parody of some piece of
technical writing – anything from a menu to stereo instructions
to a grant proposal to an academic article (of course, in
abbreviated form). What you parody is up to you. though you
must copy and paste an example of the technical writing genre
you are parodying into the document for me to reference during
grading. Paste the original at the end of the document afier a
page break. You will be expected to follow all the conventions
of the technical genre you’ve chosen. If you do an article, for
instance, you will need an abstract. a Works Cited page, etc.
Remember the point of critical parody in this instance is to
demonstrate that you know the conventions of the technical
writing genre you have chosen so well that you can use them to
some critical end. Just as Sokal’s goal was to show the vacuity
of postmodern theory, your goal will be to highlight something
about your subject matter than functions as a weakness, an
overreach. or an untruth. In short: your parody must have a
point, must make a critique.

The critical parody itself should be 4-5 pages. A one-page
reflection should follow the piece in which you explain what
you have chosen to parody and the technical moves you have
made in order to do so – be as specific as possible about which
conventions you put to use in your parody. Finish this section
with an estimation of whether or not your parody is successful
and how it could be improved.

Again. paste and example of the genre you are critiquing at the
end of the document, so I can measure your successful
negotiation of the conventions based upon it.
