Global Political Actors

There are several types of global political actors and the overall effectiveness in addressing global challenges vary by type and by the individual actor’s resources and capabilities.

The obvious category of global political actors is states. States are usually countries but can consist of prominent cities as well such as New York City or London for example. States are generally represented on a global level by elected officials or their appointed dignitaries or in some cases royalty or dictators. The amount of global influence wielded by a state generally depends on the amount of economic resources, military resources or soft power available. States like the USA or China are generally considered superpowers due to the immense influence they have on global relations by way of economic and military might, but states such as Iran can exert significant regional influence and minor global influence due to its abundance of oil reserves.

Another global political actor are non-governmental organizations or NGOs. NGOs are groups that are unaffiliated with states and act globally to work on specific problems. Well known NGOs are the Red Cross that provides humanitarian relief during war or after natural disasters and ActionAid which works toward eliminating poverty in the world. NGOs are generally limited in influence by the amount of resources available to their operations and by the amount of cooperation received from the states they are operating within at any given time.

International governmental organizations are another type of global political actor. The United Nations is an example of an organization made up of representatives from several states who come together to address international issues and promote cooperation between states. The United Nations wields significant influence, but is limited in what it can and cannot do by its own bylaws. Other examples include the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). International governmental organizations exert considerable influence on global politics and are limited only by the rules and regulations implemented by the member states of any particular organization.

There are many more examples of global political actors that have varying levels of influence on global politics. Criminal and terrorist groups can be considered global actors as they can wield regional and in rare circumstances global influence. Global foundations and think tanks are also examples of global actors.
