cultural analysis

In Part II of our course, “Literary & Cultural Analysis: Poetry, Novel, & Short Story,” we will blend the skills of close reading with the skills of cultural analysis. To be more particular, we will ask how our close reading of a text’s content and form (the focus of Part I of the course) changes when we also consider cultural factors. “Culture” is a notoriously slippery term, and there are countless cultural conditions at play in the creation and interpretation of any literary work. The cultural conditions we will focus on in this course are race, class, and gender. Accordingly, Essay 2 will be a formal essay of 5-7 pages that combines close reading with a consideration of race or class or gender to analyze a text of your choice.
