(Hint: Go through the steps of the scientific method in your answer using a specific example from primatology or paleoanthropology or forensic anthropology or human ecology). (5 points)
3. In The Origin of Species (1859), Darwin explained evolution by natural selection using three “postulates” (also described in our textbook as “prerequisites” for natural selection). Please explain these three postulates (prerequisites) for natural selection (as a mechanism) for evolution in populations. (10 points)
4. A contemporary example of biological evolution is the resurgence of diseases previously controlled by antibiotics. Using Darwin’s Theory of Natural Selection, explain how antibiotic-resistance in bacteria populations can increase in frequency. (Hint: Use the 3 postulates in question 3 as a framework for your answer). (10 points) Bonus: You have been appointed to talk to the media about evolution, providing a one-sentence “sound-bite”. In one sentence, describe how “evolution” differs from “natural selection”. Your audience is the general public (non-scientists).
