Describe Performance In The Workplace Business Finance – Management

Describe Performance In The Workplace Business Finance – Management

Project Overview: Your project should address an organisational issue/challenge, indicating a problem (potential root cause and consequence) identified in a real hospitality organization (support your sources). This problem may relate to financial, HR, or operational aspects, but its impact on employee or stakeholder relationships must be evidenced. It should demonstrate the strategic processes and action plans applied in solving the problem, and involve the use, application and evaluation of theories. Overall Aim: To demonstrate an understanding of how OB theory and practice is applied in solving organisational and work related issues that need improvement; bearing in mind that the hallmark of OB is aimed at acquiring understanding of how organisational change, learning and practice is conducted.

Learning Outcomes (from CRS):

1. Identify various challenges existing in organizations, and analyze the usefulness and appropriateness of psychological and/or sociological theories based on societal and cultural determinants.

2. Demonstrate the process of application and implementation of theories to specific problems, and evaluate how the outcome impacts different stakeholders.

3. Appraise the extent to which the formation and evolution of organizations rely on careful considerations of culture, communication and sharing of goals, in the drive for value.

4. Use theories and models in studying, organizing and presenting knowledge individually and as part of a group.

Organization & Methodology: This project consists of two parts: a group report and a group presentation, and carries 60% of the whole course. Students will work in groups of approx. 5 students. Groups will be formed randomly in class in week 2 and subsequent changes will not be permitted.

2

Students are asked to identify a problem or challenge and its root cause in a real organization. They will then use and apply suitable theoretical frameworks addressing that problem. Please note that all groups must get approval for their organizational problem from the lecturer before proceeding with the work. The report should be based on secondary research as well as academic theories. Sources may include, for example, reliable online magazines, newspapers, trade journals, corporate websites. The group report is submitted in week 14 and should follow the structure indicated below. The presentation in week 15 is a pitch to the “organization’s CEO”, and should suggest and evaluate an implementation plan of the selected course of action in a convincing, comprehensive and feasible way. A brief Q&A session follows the conclusion of the presentation and demands that arguments are properly defended. Each group is responsible for the use and composition of support media (slides). Group report (30%) The report is a research-based project, which identifies an organisational problem, and then defines and demonstrates suitable OB theories to tackle this problem. The report must follow good writing standards e.g. language, presentation, referencing etc., and use the Glion assessment front cover. Recommended font type and size: Arial or Times New Roman 12. Spacing 1.5. The report should be of 2500 words (with a 10% allowance), not counting title page, table of contents and references. The report should adopt the following structure:

• Cover page

• Table of contents

• Introduction (start of word count)

• Problem statement

• Identification and clarification of OB theories

• Appropriateness of OB theories to the problem statement

• Conclusions (end of word count)

• Reference list

• Appendices (if any) (Refer to task and weighting for further specifications) Group presentation (25%) The group presentation serves to demonstrate skills in regards to personal development and the complexity of group dynamics. It further encourages students to develop suitable presentation tools and techniques critical in the translation of theories into comprehensive and feasible practices for company managers. Presentation time is 20 minutes (with 2 minutes allowance either side), followed by 5 minutes Q&A. Marks will be deducted if presentations are too long or too short. Slides must be designed in a professional, readable and concise way. The presentation builds on the problem statement presented in the report and should adopt the following structure:

• Introduction to team and purpose of presentation

• Table of contents

• Brief recap on the organization and the identified problem

• Implementation plan

• Critical evaluation of processes and impacts on stakeholders

• Conclusions (quick summary)

• Questions and answers (Refer to task and weighting for further specifications) Resources available: Organisational Behaviour Textbook, power point presentations, tutorials GIHE library and referenced resources

Special instructions: Please refer to the GLION student handbook for information concerning the group work policy. You should also refer to the handbook for guidelines on plagiarism, late work submission and incomplete work. The GIHE Assessment Front sheet including the Statement of Authorship should be attached to your project and submitted at the reception. Please note that arriving late for the presentation also results in grade reduction. If you do not show up for your presentation and have no mitigation you will receive 0% for the whole presentation.
