Describe the main methods used to reduce the risks to health & safety

A retail company specialising in homeware and furniture has acquired an out of town site to build a new retail premises. The approximate size of the building is 0.5 hectares. The site is on an underdeveloped Industrial site away from residential buildings. The chosen form of construction is a portal frame with a mezzanine floor areato accommodate the warehousing, retail, customer café & toilets and administrative office space. The ground is soft clay which will require a specialist foundation or ground improvement solution.

a) Discuss the most appropriate form of substructure solution for the new building.

b) Explain with the aid of clear labelled diagrams or photographic images the typical materials and components used for the following elements of the building:
i. Superstructure;
ii. Ground floor;
iii. Mezzanine floor;
iv. External walls.

Task 2- Commercial & Industrial Construction Methods

a) Clearly describe the construction and erection processes used to build the portal frame structure described above.Pay particular attention to the trade skills required, typical construction plant used and the sequence of operations to be undertaken.

b) Describe the main methods used to reduce the risks to health & safety when building the superstructure. Include the main H&S regulations that apply in this case.

Task 3 -Civil Engineering Infrastructure Methods

It is proposed to make a new pedestrian & cycle access running directly from the Asian Business Park at Beckton Park DLR to London City Airport DLR peninsular. The route should be as flat and direct as possible to accommodate the use of travelators. The physical barriers that need to be overcome are the Royal Docks and the City Airport runway. The design team propose that a tunnel will be used to overcome these.

You can assume ground conditions similar to the site investigation report given in Task 1.

a) Compare the following three methods of constructing a retaining wall for the tunnel portals.Explain the likely choice of these walls in the above scheme in terms of design, sustainability and ease of construction.
I. Sheet piling
II. Secant piling
III. Diaphragm walling

b) Briefly outline with the use of neatly labelled sketches the following three different methods for constructing the tunnel:

I. Horizontal ‘pipe’ jacking
II. Cut & cover
III. Bored tunnelling

Then select and justify the most appropriate method for the tunnel in terms of relative cost, sustainability and ease of construction.

c) Produce a simple long vertical section along the line of your proposed route showing clearly the location of the main structural elements of the scheme. See indicative route in Figure 1 below.
