CA 1: Literature Review
The Literature Review is a report of the published information on an issue or topic. A researcher studies the literature in an effort to determine what is known and to
determine varying viewpoints when there is a controversy. The purpose of the literature review is to help solve a problem or win support or determine what further
research needs to be conducted. Thus, the literature review is more than a collection of information. It includes analysis and interpretation of the significance and
implications in light of a problem that the researcher defines. A literature review may be a complete report or it may be a part of another report. This literature
review can be incorporated into the research section for your overall final project report.
Objectives
This literature review assignment is designed to:
help you understand the reasons for a literature review;
help you gain practice in research and the use of published sources;
prepare for your final project report.

Your task is to define a problem (some conflict between assumptions and evidence) or a need for information and to review what published materials say about the issue.
Choose a topic based on your final project, you can use the literature review for preliminary research on the topic and ultimately incorporate the literature review
into the report.
Initially develop an extended outline around your subject area.

Characteristics of a Good Literature Review (Evaluation Criteria)
The evaluation of the Literature review will be based around these expectations:
Audience Awareness
shows awareness of who will use the report and for what purpose
defines issues in terms of the audience’s needs, interests, and viewpoints
*Content
focuses on issues or a problem (not just “facts” or summaries)
analyses and explains significance; “develops” (does not merely “collect”) information; “comments” and “interprets”; includes inferences as well as facts
current–may include historical sources but acknowledges the most recent thinking and research about the issue
answers: who-what-where-why-when-with what results-so what?
Organization
organized by topics or issues rather than by sources (consider a classification/partition pattern)
begins with a “problem” and ends with results or significance
Format
headings may reveal the main divisions by indicating subtopics
Style
uses lots of concrete words, good action verbs
the writer’s own voice dominates (not a string of quotes)
Grammar, Punctuation, Documentation
follows conventional standards
documentation follows the style of the discipline
