A non-reactive chloride solution is continuously discharged into an aquifer. The concentration at the discharge location is 800 mg/L. A) Determine the maximum concentration of chlorides to be observed at an observation well 30 m downstream of the discharge location, B) Plot the time-history of chloride concentrations at the observation well C) Determine the time at which a chloride concentration of 5 mg/L is expected at the observation well, and D) determine the first time at which the chloride concentration at the well is within 1% of the maximum concentration identified in part A. The aquifer properties are: K = 4.3 x 104 n/s,dh/dl = 0.0005, effective porosity = 0.23, and the effective diffusion coefficient = 0.8 x m2/s. Hint: The complimentary error function is available with the Analysis Tool pack Add-in for Microsoft Excel. However it cannot handle negative inputs.
