DISCOURSE AND GENRE ANALYSIS
Discourse and Genre Analysis
The purposes of this project is to learn about the genres in your discourse community. You will engage in inquiry and research to explore the various types of texts that exist in your field.
For this assignment you are to go on a research safari. You are hunting for various types of discourse and genres in your field. Look for the kind of writing or speaking done by scholars and professionals in your discipline, the kinds of work published, the relevant journals and genres, both written and multimodal, as well as the types of occupations available within the discourse community. At the end of this project, you will have an exemplification or description of a series of documents to show the research you conducted. You are required to find the following:
At least three items for scholarly research published in your discipline
Make a list of scholarly journals and/or academic sites that publish scholarly research in your discipline
At least five genres in your discipline
The five genres can be from academia or the workplace. For each, provide a link, or if a link is not available, a sample of the text will do. Include a description of the type of conventions each genre uses, the type of discourse used, how this is viewed as a unit of discourse within your discipline. Include a summary of how this represents your discipline.
At least two professional organizations
Compile a list of at least three professional organizations in their field and what services they offer as well as how they work as an organization.
Professions (at least five)
Compile a list of possible professions in your discipline and field and what requirements are needed for each position.
The medium you use to display the collection is a matter of choice. You may choose to display your collection in a way that you feel would work within your discipline. It can be a PowerPoint, a report, a Prezi, a video, etc. The medium chosen should be able to convey the fully developed ideas that are required for this assignment.
