Discuss a current paradigm shift you think is either already happening or needs to happen around a specific topic or issue using a specific theoretical perspective

Guidelines
The United States has seen many paradigm shifts in the last hundred years: from voting restrictions to voting rights to voter oppression; shifting family dynamics including who works or is a “breadwinner,” who takes care of the children, who has children, who makes up a family, etc.; what it means to be a part of a political party and even the focus of such groups, and much more. Reflect, for a moment, on the term “paradigm shift” as it relates to your reading and your understanding of theoretical concepts.

Instructions
Discuss a current paradigm shift you think is either already happening or needs to happen around a specific topic or issue using a specific theoretical perspective. Answer the following questions:

  • What paradigm shift did you identify? Explain with depth why you think this paradigm shift is needed and how it would be/is manifested in reality, e.g., change in laws, social structures, etc.
  • Which theoretical lens did you select and how does it help you examine or understand the identified paradigm shift.
  • What is your role as a social worker in the paradigm shift? Think both about the NASW Code of Ethics and your interactions on a macro and/or micro level.
