Discuss how the clean-up and restoration prioritization was determined

On April 10, 2010, the Deepwater Horizon, an offshore drilling platform, exploded causing the death of eleven rig workers and an historical oil spill lasting 87 days. With an estimated 210 million gallons of crude oil discharged into the Gulf of Mexico, the event became the largest marine oil spill in history. The effects of the spill include the contamination of Gulf of Mexico waters, death of marine life, devastating impact to our natural resources, and years of economic hardship in the fishery and tourism industries. Events like these require extensive clean-up efforts and long term planning. It can also be used as an example of how our fossil fuel habits create a risk for the environment.

“Oil spill response methods are generally divided into three main categories:

1 Mechanical recovery: Oil is contained in an area using boom or natural containment and removed using skimmers and pumps.

2 Non-mechanical recovery: Use of chemical dispersants, burning, or bioremediation, where natural processes degrade or disperse an oil slick.

3 Manual recovery: Oil is removed using simple hand tools and pails, shovels or nets. (The PEW Charitable Trust, 2013)”

In this week’s reading we learned that a multimedia approach to pollution management is critical for environmental managers of today and tomorrow. Large scale, and even small scale, oil spill responses generate a lot of waste.

• What do we do with the oil that has been recovered?

2. In the Module 3 readings we learned about planning and managing an environmental management plan. These plans provide a comprehensive approach to an environmental impact and are managed and maintained within complex economic, social, and political realities.

After the Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred, millions of gallons of crude oil washed onto our shorelines and impacted our natural resources. The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 “establishes liability for injury to, destruction of, loss of, or loss of use of natural resources”. And “designates natural resource trustees, authorizes recovery of natural resource damages as the result of oil spills, defines natural resource damages to include – the cost of restoring, rehabilitating, replacing or acquiring the equivalent of the damaged resources, the reasonable cost of assessing those damages, and the diminution in values of those natural resources pending restoration. (DARRP, 2016)”

The following link is a comprehensive, integrated ecosystem restoration approach for restoration implementation as determined by the natural resource trustees. The document http://www.gulfspillrestoration.noaa.gov/restoration-planning/gulf-plan/ spans the environmental impacts of the oil spill and the best procedures for restoring resources.

Based on the trustee’s management and restoration plan:
