The landscape of environmental justice has fundamentally shifted in the last decade. While we typically think of issues like landfill and chemical plant siting as environmental justice issues, now the effects of global climate change are shaping the debates surrounding environmental justice. Defenders of the current practices that result in environmental racism claim that it is economic, not racial, considerations that account for disproportionate impacts on nonwhites; therefore the practices are neither racist nor morally objectionable.
1) Do you agree with this assertion, given the statistics on injuries, the statistics on settlements paid, the expediency of claims?
2) Does intent matter?
3) Is there no moral culpability if the injury is only an indirect effect?
