Discuss personal and professional effectiveness

Question 1

-A11 students on business and management Degree courses should study a first-year Unit. which encourages them to develop their personal and professional effectiveness’.

Write an Essay, discussing the above statement, with reference to appropriate literature and supporting your discussion with relevant examples. You may relate your discussion with specific reference to the DMC unit and/or the wider context. You must ensure that you discuss in depth a minimum of two management competencies (refer to the DMC Unit Guide). Your essay should also include personal reflections regarding your levels of competence and confidence in these areas.

Question 2

Write a ‘Critical Incident Review’, in relation to an ‘incident’ (or series of related incidents) or event that took place during the DMC unit.
The critical incident review gives you an opportunity to reflect critically upon something that happened during the DMC unit, whether in relation to a particular one-off event or a slower. developing situation, and relating this to the literature and theory. For example, things you might consider include:

• a particular achievement that represented a personal ‘breakthrough’
• a challenge that you successfully overcame
• a challenge that you had difficulty resolving
• dealing with conflict
• coping with the unexpected
• developing a new skill
• etc.

Your review should reflect on the incident from a range of perspectives or angles, beginning with a brief description, but developing into an analysis and evaluation. Thus, although your essay will describe the incident, the focus should be on analysing its significance (why did you choose THIS one?), how you (and/or others) responded to the situation, how you may have enhanced your knowledge (subject-related and/or of yourself as an individual), how you have developed personally and professionally as a result of the experience, what you wish you had done differently, what you are pleased that you did, what qualities you drew upon or developed, etc.

This is a reflective piece of writing – about learning about yourself – and about how you relate with others. It should therefore have elements of descriptive narrative, show evidence of engaging with reflective writing, and should also draw on appropriate theory and literature (academic and commercial).
