Discuss relationship between feminism and postcolonialism

Feminism is of great interest to postcolonial artists and scholars. Why is this so? Discuss the relationship between feminism and postcolonialism in at least two examples from contemporary art and/or visual culture.

Course Objectives – On completion of this course, students should be able to:

• Demonstrate knowledge of the many aspects of visual culture; defining qualities, ambiguities and their interrelations
• Articulate major issues and developments in the field of visual culture, particularly those that impact on the discourse of contemporary art
• Analyse the spectacle of contemporary visual art and culture – Biennials, Triennials, art fairs and art journals.
• Trace the demise of ideology in contemporary visual art and culture; from postmodernism to post-criticism – Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst.
• Identify hybrid conjunctions between differing genres and stylistic tropes from the many and varied aspects of contemporary visual culture.
• Demonstrate skills to undertake research in the complementary fields of visual culture and contemporary art.
