Please use examples from the video to answer these questions.  You may use your textbook for clarification of these concepts if needed.

1. Define Social stratification and racial stratification?

2. How was race structured or built into the United States and South Africa as a system of stratification in the video?

Address this broad aforementioned question by addressing the more specific questions below.  Ask yourself these questions while watching the video and write brief answers (examples) to these questions from America or South Africa.

Systemic racism – how was racial practices built into multiple institutions?

Racial Laws – how did the government legalize or sanction racism?  What laws were passed?

Institutional – What forms of racism existed in specific institutions?  (institutions: Work, police, voting, schools, public accommodations, etc.)

Individual level – was racism exhibited by individuals or groups: prejudices, stereotypes, actions etc. of specific individuals?

Racial ideologies – What beliefs were used to justify racism?  What expressed beliefs of racial inferiority, etc.?  (These are beliefs that are not necessarily true, hence they are called “ideologies”.)

3.  Secondly, please respond to at least three of your classmates responses in order to receive full points.

When answering these questions please do your best find at least one specific example from the video for each of the items.  For example, South Africa or America exhibited institutional racism through its legal system as evidence by the presence of racial laws, such as the Native Act, Group Areas Act, etc. which legalized racial segregation, etc. etc. etc.

Grading:  This is an informal response in which you will apply the concepts to real events.  I don’t expect you to write an essay.  One to two paragraphs to answer the question thoughtfully will suffice.  Make sure you address individual items listed.  Support your answer with information from the video.   Then provide a well thought out response to three of your classmates answers.  This a simple discussion.  You will be graded not on the length of your response but on the quality of your response.
