Discussion Board #5: Intro and Source Summary

Only have to write two paragraphs:

Source Being Summarized:

Assignment:

Here, please draft the opening two paragraphs of your Summary and Rhetorical Analysis assignment: the introduction and the source article summary.

For the introduction, you will want to engage your audience’s interest, establish the general topic of the source essay, identify the source essay you will be analyzing, offer some sense of its goal and present your own preliminary thesis about its use of rhetoric and effectiveness for its target audience. Along the way you will also need to tell your readers what they need to know up front about the rhetor and the rhetorical situation, information you will draw on and possibly extend in the body of your essay. Try to transition smoothly from one element of the introduction to another.

A summary of the source text should follow your introduction paragraph. The summary should be clear and concise, and it should be objective; withhold your own opinion in both direct and indirect forms. Use author tags to make clear at all times when you are presenting the words and/or ideas of the author of the text, and when the words and/or ideas of the summary are your own. Use little or no direct quotation.

The sample rhetorical analysis that begins on p. 170 of Inventing Arguments, and our sample summary of Rosemarie Garland-Thomsom’s “Becoming Disabled,” will give you some ideas about how to draft these two paragraphs. (Note, however, that the Inventing Arguments essay doesn’t consolidate its introductory material into one paragraph nor consolidate its summary into a single paragraph.)
