Discussion Board Responses and Writing Assignment

Discussion Board Responses and Writing Assignment

After Saddleback College’s spring break (March 17-24), teams #1-5 will post one Discussion Board assignment and submit one Paper assignment at the end of Week #10. This is the course’s midterm assignment; the only other time we will follow this format will be during Final Exam Week.

During Week #10, teams will not be expected to respond to one another on the Discussion Board, but team members must discuss, plan, and create the assignments together on the course Wiki Page.

Important note: No discussion responses will be required, only the original team post.

Please be sure to contact your team early, in order to plan for assignments effectively. I have provided a Wiki page for each team. The Wiki Pages are available on our Blackboard page, under My Groups on the left. If you are unfamiliar with Wiki, copy and paste this link in your browser for a tutorial:

For full credit, each group member must participate on the Wiki Page a minimum of 3 times.

Remember, this is a “collaborative” effort for each team! If you do not participate fully, you will receive no credit!

Prompt for Discussion Board Response

One group member should post the response. Be sure the assignment identifies your team by number.

Prompt Part 1:

Which one of the works that we have read so far this semester has proven the most entertaining?

Explain the criteria (standards for judgment) you have chosen for your analysis, and be sure to reference textual evidence (key scenes, events, or characters) that supports those criteria.

Prompt Part 2: (This must be a different choice!)

Which one of the works that we have read so far this semester has proven the most educational?

Once again, explain the criteria that you have chosen for your analysis, and be sure to reference textual evidence that supports those criteria.

Prompt for Writing Assignment

Submit this paper to the Turnitin folder, labeled “Writing Assignment Week #10,” under Content
The paper should be a minimum of 2 full pages (maximum 3 pages), double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 font, with 1” margins and a minimal heading.
One group member should post the response – be sure the assignment identifies your team by number.

Writing Prompt:

The ENG 25 objectives suggest that students in this course should be able to “explain the social, philosophical, spiritual, or ethical issues raised by a work of literature.”

With that guideline in mind,

1) Identify the most important issue (social, philosophical, spiritual or ethical) raised so far in our readings.

2) Choose two readings that deal directly with that issue, and then compare and contrast those selections. Both similarities and differences should be explained.

3) To make the comparison, identify three topics that you will examine as evidence.

(For example, you might compare settings, characters, events, conflict, or point of view — to name a few possibilities.)

4) For each comparative topic, use textual evidence to determine the strengths and weaknesses of each work.

5) For your conclusion, designate the work that best explores the issue that you have chosen and explain your choice.

Be sure that the name of each student on your team who participates in both these assignments is listed at the end of this paper.

Grades: Both the assignments will be worth twice their usual value for each student.
