Discussion: Data Mining

Discussion Assignment Question

Mod2-Big data concept.jpgIn Chapter 3 of the course textbook, the authors describe how the U.S. military in Afghanistan used a massive data mining system, referred to as Nexus 7, to better understand the Afghan society (Turban, Volonino, & Wood, 2015, pp. 97-98). Worldwide print and broadcast media often present data that debates whether or not our societies have arrived at an “Orwellian 1984” state where government agencies, through the utilization of extensive data mining technologies, watch our every move and know our every written and spoken thought.

Question:

It is alleged that government agencies such as the NSA, CIA, and FBI in the U.S. engage in data mining your personal information for the purpose of protecting the national security. Should we be concerned about such data mining and that “dirty data” lacking in integrity and deemed untrustworthy might be stored?

Respond to a minimum of two peers’ posts. With at least 75 words ea.

Use APA Format and in text citation

Remember, one goal in the Discussion assignments is to create an atmosphere of interaction by posting meaningful responses that advance and expand the depth of the discussion. Do this by providing additional support to your peers’ initial and response posts, or if appropriate, by challenging them if you feel that the data that they presented is weak. Likewise, when a peer challenges the data in your posts, debate the issue, and providing further support for your points of view on the topic.

To assist you in submitting scholarly data in this first Discussion assignment, note that the above descriptive data contains a “hint” regarding how to format and place the initial in-text citation for the course textbook utilizing APA style. The proper format for referencing the course textbook in a Reference List utilizing APA style is as follows:
