Objective 2: Summarize the causes and impacts of earthquakes.
Earthquakes have caused considerable fear and damage since at least the time of the flood. Biblical prophecy associates earthquakes with end times. Plate tectonic theory explains the causes and locations of earthquakes, which occur predominantly at plate boundaries but which may occur at any fault. According to the U.S. Geological Survey 42 states including Ohio, “have a reasonable chance of experiencing damaging ground shaking from an earthquake in the next 50 years.”

? Read Chapter 5, Sections 1-4 in The Heavens and the Earth textbook.
? For onsite students, come to class prepared to discuss questions 6, 7, and 12 from the Review Section in Chapter 5. Topics will include:
? the types of earthquake waves
? locating the focus of earthquake waves
? measuring earthquake waves
? earth interior
? Research an event involving an earthquake OR investigate the causes, measuring scales, and impacts of earthquakes
? Submission Item: Write a 1-2 page written report on earthquakes. Your report should summarize the measuring scales, causes, impacts, and most common locations of earthquakes and will include either an identification chart or relate the information to a current event of a recent earthquake.
