You have been assigned an infectious disease agent. Using your own words please answer the following questions in paragraph form (no lists) based ONLY on your pathogen.

Research Component

Pathogen Description (14 points)

• Please give the Genus speciesname of your pathogen using proper protocol AND name of the disease(s) it causes.
• b) What is the pathogen type (bacterial, viral, etc.)? Is your pathogen acellular or cellular AND if cellular, is it a prokaryote or eukaryote?
• What is the natural reservoir of your microbe?
• Describe the most common portal of entry for your organism.
• Describe any mechanism your organism uses to attach to host tissues or survive host defenses.
• Describe any virulence factors (toxin, enzymes, etc.) your organism possesses.
• Describe how this disease is transmitted through a population.

Pathogen Identification by Signs (6 points)

• If someone was infected with your microbe, what laboratory tests may be used for identification?
• When viewing the results of a CBC (Complete Blood Count), which white blood cell counts be abnormal, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, basophils.
• Is your pathogen cultured in the lab? Is a selective medium specifically used for your pathogen? Is so which medium or media are used?

Treatment of an Individual (4 points)

• List possible antimicrobials that may be used to treat someone that is infected with your microbe.
• Can the disease your organism causes be prevented through the use of a vaccine?  If so, please describe the vaccine.

Images (4 points)

• Post an image of the infection caused by your pathogen OR the pathogen cycle OR an educational diagram about the disease but not the pathogen by itself. Please document your source.
• Post a microscopic image of your pathogen (not disease). Please include your source with the image.

Case Study

• Provide create a case study based on a patient that presents to the ED (Emergency Department) infected with your pathogen. Please include the following:

o   patient history (5 points);

o   patient exam (5 points);

o   diagnostic tests (5 points);

o   relationship or lack of, as the diagnosis pertains to environmental and/or genetic factors (2 points).

Documentation

• In-text citations using APA format (5 points)
• Minimum of five resources using in-text citationsand works cited in your submission following APA format (5 points)

You should be able to find all the information you need to create your scenario in your textbook and/or any medical resource, such as the CDC, NIH, Mayo Clinic, Webmd to name a few. Do not use sources that are not of a scientific nature, such as Pinterest or other social articles. You must use and document a minimum of five sources. Grading information is included in the attachment.  You may edit your submission and resubmit it as many times as you want.
