Most firms hire more workers when they want to increase production and lay off workers when they want to reduce production. As a new manager of your company, do

you think this is the best approach? If not what are other consideration you need to consider as far as other factors (inputs) and cost are involved?

As a new manager to a company, I think the first step is to understand how efficient your workers are, and find how to push your workers to get the right production. I

work as a construction superintendent, and when the bosses want something done, the first thing they say is “you need more men on the site”. I disagree with this

approach because why would I bring in 20 workers when 12 would do the job in the same amount of time. My point being, as a manager, you need to be able to understand

the process, and make sure that your workers have all the tools they need to get the job done efficiently, and also, it is important to understand that not everyone

works the same. A big part of my job is getting workers to do certain tasks that they are strong at, which will in turn help get that job done quicker.

To hire more workers to increase production is not always the best idea. As a new manager, you really need to understand your workers, the process of the work done,

and understand the costs. Keep in mind, too many workers means the there could be workers not giving their maximum potential. An easy way to fall behind budget is

through your labor

Module 05 Discussion 01: Chapter 5
by Jackie Patel – Monday, February 13, 2017, 4:28 PM

If I was a new manager of a company I would not follow the approach of hiring more workers when there is a need to increase production and lay off workers when there

is a need to reduce production. I would not follow this process because this puts your company at a risk because you end up losing all the experienced workers that

not only know work well but know the company really well. This might be beneficial if the company was looking to cut cost because laying off people and hiring new ones

saves money on salaries. Experienced workers usually have higher salaries then a new comer in the company. For example, I work for UnitedHealth Group and we recently

had 1000 layoffs around the country. There was a whole issue about age decimation with the layoffs and soon after followed an lay off with younger new workers.

Overall you never know the true reason for layoffs in a company but If the only reason was to reduce production I don’t believe in laying off people. Maybe cutting

down hours of workers would do it, this way at least the company doesn’t lose out on experience.

Section 1:

Public Law

Public health organizations, particularly at the state level, have the power to “coerce” individuals and organizations for the protection of the community, e.g.,

restriction of indoor smoking, licensing of restaurants, etc.

There are certain laws, such as those banning indoor smoking, that can easily be defended as being in the best interest of the public because the risk to the public

health clearly outweighs the rights of an individual. Â Smoking in an enclosed public place is a situation where the actions of an individual (smoker) are having a

direct negative impact on the group (non-smokers).Â

When New York City first moved to enact a law that prohibits smoking in parks, on beaches, or in public plazas, supporters of the law contended it protects the public

health while critics contend that it infringes upon civil liberties and there is no danger from second hand smoke in open places such as these. Â Some have argued that

distracted driving via cell phone use/texting or the exhaust fumes of all of the cars and buses in NYC poses a far greater danger to the public health than smelling a

whiff of smoke while outdoors. Â In other words, they contend there is no direct negative impact on the public from outdoor smoking.

Use what you have read about public health law to support your response to the following:

1.      If you support bans such as this, what argument do you use to justify your position? If your stance is to go even further and propose a total ban on all

smoking (making smoking illegal), do you support banning everything that poses a risk to the public health and/or safety? Â If not, how do you justify banning one risk

to the public health and safety while choosing not to ban something else?

2.      If you do not think this ban (or similar) should have been enacted, what argument would you use to justify your position?

3.      If you see merit to both sides, can you describe a potential compromise that would benefit public health while preserving individual rights?

4.      Consider other risk reduction initiatives: seat belt laws, helmet laws, posting calories on menus, forcing states to adopt 21 years as the legal

drinking age, or warnings on cigarette packages, for example. Are these protecting society or an intrusion of the “nanny state”?

Section 2:

(For this section, ensure that the article used is referenced or attached)

The realm of public health is diverse; with roles for local, state, federal, and even international agencies. As with other sectors of health care, professional

communities contribute as well in direct and indirect manners.

Research one or more of these professional organizations, or another entity with a public health focus.

·        American Public Health Association

·        Association of State and Territorial Health Officials

·        National Association of County and City Health Officials

·        Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health

What role do they play in the promotion of public health? What mechanisms do they use? Do any publish a peer-reviewed journal? Would you join one of these

organizations? Why or why not?Â

As a second step, identify an article in a juried (peer reviewed) publication related to public health. Why did you select this article? What impact has it had or

might it have?
