Answer 2 of the following questions:

1) In the Western world, “Track 1 Diplomacy” or the negotiations between high-level political officials and military units have dominated the field of conflict resolution. In recent years however, religious peacemakers have challenged Track 1 Diplomacy and have argued in favor of developing alternative and additional pathways to conflict resolution. Some religious peacemakers reject Track 1 Diplomacy altogether and others maintain that religious peacemakers need to work together with these official efforts in the work of conflict resolution.

In a clear and well-organized essay discuss how any three of the following thinkers would respond to this issue: Scott Appleby, Marc Gopin, Miroslav Volf, Qamar Ul-Huda.

2) According to William Cavanaugh, the ‘myth of religious violence’ has generated distorted views of religion that have resulted in problematic domestic and foreign policy analyses. Like Cavanaugh, advocates of religious peacemaking resist this quick and superficial generalization about religion and violence. Nonetheless, advocates for religious peacemaking are not naive about the realities of violence and understand that it is important to address conditions that lend themselves to violence and how to overcome them. In a clear and well-organized essay, discuss how 3 of the following theorists reflect upon the relationship between religion and violence: Cavanaugh, Appleby, Gopin, Volf and/or Qamar Ul-Huda.

3) It is often argued that among religion’s greatest contributions to peacemaking is its focus on forgiveness. In a clear and well-organized essay, describe how three of the following thinkers understand the role and function of forgiveness in peacemaking: Appleby, Gopin, Wolf, and any of the writers from Crescent and Dove.
