IMPORTANT The goal of any rhetorical analysis is to demonstrate your understanding of how the piece communicates its messages and meanings. One way of looking at this process is that you are breaking the piece down into parts. By understanding how the different parts work, you can offer insights as to the overall persuasive strategies of the piece. Often you are not looking to place a value judgment on the piece, and if there is an implicit or implied argument you may not be ultimately taking a side. (Purdue Owl, 2010)

For your first formal assignment, I want you to demonstrate your understanding of rhetorical analysis. You will use your analysis of your chosen text to prove to me that you have grasped the fundamental elements of rhetorical analysis as we have been practicing it in class. Note that I have just defined purpose and audience for you: I am your audience and your purpose is to demonstrate your ability to conduct a particular type of analysis.

We have practiced the major steps towards conducting a rhetorical analysis in class. Check you class notes and SG book to remember the specifics aspects you should be commenting on from the text.

About the text to analyze: Find a text produced by a leader of a movement or any influential person involved in any situation that interests you in a foreign country. Ideally, you want this to be related to the controversial issue you will investigate for project 2, but this does not have to be the case. You can also find a piece that talks about the leader or movement you chose and analyze the content of it. Some examples of texts could be: a speech, a profile, an open letter, an editorial article, an opinion article, an interview, a brochure, a propaganda pamphlet, or any other of document that you find interesting. Please, make sure to consult with me about the text you chose.

About the content of this essay: you will give an in-depth description of the rhetorical content of your text, so make sure that you provide all the information needed for your audience to clearly understand the point you are making. Provide clear examples from the text whenever possible, make sure that you clearly identify the basic aspects of its content (the context, the audience, the purpose, and the message), and remember to develop ideas about the rhetorical strategies used by the author.

About the format: your paper has to be written using a legible font in size 11 or 12; please do not use a bigger font to accomplish the length easier. The paper has to be 3 double-space pages.

Citations: Include in-text citations and a work cited entry at the end of your essay. Use MLA or APA format for this requirement
