English uses a great many words from French, and yet, we don’t claim that English and French are closely related (except through Proto-Indo European). Explain how English and French can have such a large amount of shared vocabulary and yet not be considered “related”, making sure to use and explain the terms “mother language”, “sister language”, “borrowing” and “cognate”.
