Essay Assignment 2

Order DescriptionFollowing is a list of suggested topics for the second essay assignment. Answer any one of these questions, which relate to the material presented in Units 6 through 8.

1. In order to explain the numerous facts about language development linguists have tried to formulate a theory that applies to all natural languages. These principles, which are known as linguistic universals, offer insights into how children acquire language and also answer questions such as why language is universal, why it is mastered so rapidly, and why there are only loose or incomplete connections between linguistic knowledge and experience. These features of language development follow from a single premise, which suggests that linguistic universals are an inherent part of the human instinct to learn language, that is, they are part of a biological blueprint for language development. Discuss this concept and describe how the notion of human interaction relates to language acquisition.

2. Questions concerning semantics are important to the users of a language and they encompass several different investigations: How does each language provide words and idioms for fundamental concepts and ideas (lexical semantics)? How do the parts of a sentence become integrated into the basis for understanding sentence meaning (compositional semantics)? How does our assessment of what someone means depend not only on what is actually said, but also on aspects of the context in which the statements are made and on an assessment of the information and beliefs we share with the speaker? Using examples, discuss the importance of semantic context, particularly in the case of an anecdote, or a perplexing joke, or a cross-cultural miscommunication.

3. Roughly five to six thousand languages are spoken in the world today. However, a hundred years from now, those numbers will almost certainly fall to a thousand or even less. Communities that were once self-sufficient are now finding themselves under intense pressure to integrate with their more powerful neighbours, with regional forces, or with invaders, which often leads to language loss and erosion of cultural identity. Describe, in detail, some of the forces that are reducing linguistic diversity.
