As we have seen throughout the semester, literary works are not created in isolation – they are written and read within the context of social forces, philosophical beliefs, and political realities. Part of our job as readers and critics is to untangle the various threads of influence and articulate the way literature imagines the unresolvable or problematic aspects of the real world.

We will be performing this type of analysis for our final paper, a 7 page essay that examines a text of your choosing. The text should be something narrative (that is, tells a clear story), even if it is based on a true story. Your analysis will work much like that of your response essays, as you will be tracing the portrayals of enemies in the text you choose. As with your response essays, you will put this text into conversation with the other texts we’ve read this semester.

Even though the text you’re working with will be rather long, your paper itself must be relatively focused. That means that, instead of trying to analyze the entire piece, you must pick two to three passages that most strongly demonstrate the point you’re trying to make. You will focus on these passages, explain how they prove the imaginary or idea at work, and then relate them to the rest of the text.

However, you will widen the scope of your analysis by considering the positions of two scholarly articles about the text. These can be the same two articles you used for the Research Analysis, or they can be new articles.

Your essay must be argumentative. You will make a claim – ie, “The Great Gatsby repudiates the individualism assumed by self-help advocates” – and will defend it by using evidence from the text and your research.

The paper must be at least seven pages long, double-spaced with a 12pt. Times New Roman font, and must use MLA formatting. You must provide ample quotes from your text and articles to serve as evidence of your claims.

An “A” paper has the following aspects:

A well-constructed argument demonstrating the imaginaries influencing the portrayal of enemies in your chosen text.
Focus on 2-3 specific sections of the text.
Consideration of the positions provided by two scholarly articles.
Clear relation between the chosen text and other texts read this semester.
A clear connection between the chosen section and the rest of the text.
Well-developed paragraphs and language appropriate for a scholarly audience.
No distracting grammar errors.
