Essay on Meyer and Machiavelli
Please read the two documents (Niccoló Machiavelli’s essay called “The Qualities of the Prince” and the article by Philip Meyer, “If Hitler Asked You to Electrocute a Stranger, Would You?”). These are both rather long. Leave enough time to read them well. Read them when you can concentrate without distraction. Both of these articles relate to an academic discipline called behavioral science.
When you have read the documents, please make two lists, one for Meyer and one for Machiavelli. In each list, state the thesis and the main points of each article. In addition, add to the list your own thoughts about the meaning of these articles for audiences today. Be very thorough.
By the way, there is a phrase in “The Qualities of the Prince”: “Men are a sorry lot.” This does not mean that men frequently apologize. It means that humans often do not do what they promise to do.
