Essay on Counseling Children and Adolescents

This is something that I deal wth personally on a daily basis. With my personality and my background the hardest thing for me to hear from a child is if they are being abused physicallhy or god forbid sexually. As a victim of abuse at the hands of my own father it hits me very personally if a child comes to me or if I find out that a child is being abused in any way. In the school that I work in I have to deal with this situation more than I care to think about. Even calling CPS, in my opinion is useless because they are so overloaded with cases that I feel they brush a lot of stuff off just so that they can close their cases out.
I cope with these situations by talking to my fiance about stuff, I do not give specifics to her but wre work in the same school so she understands what is going on. As a teacher she also deals with the same situations that I do on a daily basis. Especially with her being a special education teacher she deals with stuff like this a little more than a general education teacher. So being able to come home and be stressed about something and being able to talk with someone who understands what is going on is nice.
I work out a lot when I am stressed about a situation. Working out and boxing help me release a lot of pent up energy that I have when I get home from work. I also take the time to go for walks/runs with my fiance. When the weather is nice and we get to walk and spend time together everything seems better. One of my favorite activities to do is golf. When I get on the golf course I forget about a lot of what is going on and get mad at that stupid little ball instead.
I would tell a co-worker to sit back take a minute and breathe. You are not going to be effective to anyone, especially the kids that need the help the most if you are stressing out and burning yourself out. I know it is hard to do that and it is easier to say than do but you will drive your self crazy if you do not take some time for yourself.
