Violence effects women physically and mentally. According to Keith (2011), abused women “Reported poor health, problems with walking, carrying out daily activities, pain, memory loss, dizziness….” (p. 222). Psychologically women who are victimized by their partner usually experience ongoing anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem, and find it difficult to function effectively. Women who are subjected to the violence, live in fear. They learn specific behaviors to survive such as being alert, careful and avoidant. These behaviors limit their mobility and social/economic opportunities, an effective way to control women. “International policy analysts has recognized violence against women as a private matter and a public policy concern” (Keith, 2011, p. 222). This recognition has increased resources for women in education, employment and to have a voice in media to promote opportunities into positions in the public of power and leadership.

By having a voice in the media, what additional opportunities can be promoted for women?

I had a friend that was abused by her boyfriend and she would try to hide the bruises and make up stories. I had told her that she needed to get some help or he needed to get some help because they had children. I think that he verbally abused her to where she was too scared to leave him he made her think that she would never find someone that cared for her as much as he did. The last thing that I mentioned to her was that if she continued in this relationship that she could lose her kids. I think that was a wake call for her because she ended up leaving him but now she is always paranoid that he is going to show up where she is. It has been a couple years and she is getting better but she has trust issues about men now. I myself told her that give it time or to seek counseling it might help her and her kids with what they had gone through in her life with this person. This kind of abuse is such a mental and emotional type abuse that I can’t imagine what one goes through living through such fear and always thinking the worst.

Thank you for posting this information. It hurts women and it hurts our future: children. We have to provide necessary treatment and take steps to keep children from being endangered. Thackery (2010) discussed the long term implications of intimate partner abuse and the health of children growing up in this environment. It brings health risks of PTSD, anxiety, depression and the propensity of ongoing violence throughout their adult lives as learned behavioral methods of handling conflict. Students, do you think that women also suffer from PTSD with intimate partner violence? Is this just an issue for women?

One case that I used for research, involved the Machnick’s family. Machnicks’ son was forced to sleep outside on a dog mat, made to ask for clean clothes, and parents withheld his lunch money (Miller-Perrin & Perrin, 2007). It was very difficult for 12 jurors to see the harm as anything but a misdemeanor, when actually it is neglect to not provide shelter, clothing, and food. However, jurors sympathized with the parents by believing that they were stopping him from his disobedient and unscrupulous habits!

Possibly in speculation, it was because the jurors who were also parents of teen, could empathize how tough it is with adolescents. Amazingly, no one discussed other possible methods to accomplish behavioral changes, i.e., motivational workbooks, rewards, and other positive incentives. Was this abuse a multicultural issue as well? Why?
