INSTRUCTIONS:
Visit a news website (e.g., New York Times, WSJ, CNN, etc.) and find an interesting article that reports results from a published research study* that relates to media somehow. Find the original research article (use http://scholar.google.com/ or http://www.lib.msu.edu/). Create a References page that includes 1) the news article, and 2) the research study.
Write an essay about the relationship between the news article and the study (details below). Write 200 – 250 words on EACH of the following:
1. News Article Purpose and Study Fit: What was the purpose of the news article and how does the research study contribute to that purpose? What makes this specific study newsworthy?
2. What are the study’s most important details (method, sample, results)?
3. If you were an author of the published article, how would you respond to the newspaper article? Did it objectively present the study, was any piece biased, what type of information was missing from the article that you think should have been included (e.g., missing results, limitations of the study)?
Write a 100-word introduction paragraph and a ~100-word conclusion paragraph for your essay (see rubric for guidelines). Place them before and after your answers to the 3 questions, respectively (see format template below).
• Published means in an academic journal. If you are having trouble, try searching the news site for “new study” + [media issue of interest]. It may help to focus on older news articles to ensure that the research article is accessible.

1. Follow APA for citations, References, and basic format, (i.e., TNR 12, double-spaced).
