The topic for this essay is technology and how it affects your life.
The question for you is this: Does technology make your life simpler or more complicated?
Begin by prewriting to think of ways in which technology makes your life simpler or more complicated. You may focus on a single type of technology, such as your computer or your cell phone.
Determine your thesis statement by answering the question: Does technology make my life simpler or more complicated?
Plan your essay by completing an Idea Map. (Find the Idea Map for Writers template in Doc Sharing.)
Type in your thesis statement.
List the two or three ways that technology makes your life simpler or more complicated as your topic sentences.
List the key details/examples that you want to include under each topic sentence.
Draft your essay from your own knowledge and experience to include the following:
An introduction that creates interest and includes your thesis statement.
Two or three paragraphs of support, each with a topic sentence and a transition. (See page 230.)
A conclusion that brings closure to the essay and leaves a lasting impression.
One of the objectives of this assignment is for you to use a source in your writing and to document it. The source that you will use is “Calling in Late” by Kate Zernike (Chapter 7, pp. 236-239 in your text).
Add a quote or a paraphrased point from “Calling in Late” to increase the support in your essay. Your quote or paraphrase can be added to the introduction, the conclusion, or one of the paragraphs in the body of your essay, but it should be positioned to make sense in the context. (You will learn how to add the reference next week.)
Next week you will revise your essay.
