Ethical Stance

Thought Essay #1 Guidelines

Thought essays are designed to provide students with an opportunity to work with the course material outside of the context of the class lectures and discussions.

Directions: Think of a situation in which you or someone you know used one of the three ethical stances of communication (violent, seductive, or loving) and discuss how this affected the outcome of the interaction. In other words, identify the ethical stance taken by the speaker then explain how it affected the interaction for the better or worse. 

In the essay, you should include a discussion of:

• A description of the situation(what was the situation, who was involved, where did it occur, and what happened?)
• What argumentative ethical stance did you, the other, or both take? How and why? (In this situation, was I using argumentative violence, seduction, or love?) 
• How did your ethical stance affect the interaction for better or worse?

Requirements:

• 2-3 pages
• Essay format (Intro, Body, Conclusion)
• Double-spaced
• Times New Roman font
• Standard margins
• In-text citations required

No reference page or works cited page required.
