Ethics of Reading- “Faded” song by Alan Walker
Look at the five “sorts of things that a close reading might typically notice” on p. 1 of Gallop’s essay, and then pick one method and use it to “close read” “Faded” lyrics song. For instance, you might pick unusual words or phrases that stick out to you and then highlight the places in the text where they are used, how they are used, what different things they could mean.
Then, write a couple of paragraphs that use the method you chose and discusses specific parts of your excerpt (make sure to include the excerpt). Use direct quotations from the text to show your reader what parts you are close-reading. Define the words that you think need defining, and try to define them in more than one way. Dictionaries will be helpful, but they must be quoted and cited.
You do not need an introduction or conclusion for this essay – just make sure to include the excerpt, title, author, etc.
Conclude your asssignment with a paragraph about your experience rereading the text and using the close-reading method. What was useful about this? What was difficult? What was confusing?
