Discuss the causes for the “new” European imperialism of the latter nineteenth century. Why did Europeans find it so necessary to expand into and colonize other world regions? Does a purely economic argument adequately explain the enthusiasm many Europeans showed for the imperialist project? What factors worked to diminish this enthusiasm by the early twentieth century?
