Reluctantly tightening the straps on my back brace, I prepared myself for another day of middle school. I pulled a backpack over my shoulders and the weight of the books pushed down on my aching back. Because the brace was uncomfortable and brought attention to my condition, I contemplate hiding my brace at home. I know, however, that this back brace is the last option to avoid surgery that would impact the rest of my life.

When I was seven, my parents noticed there was something wrong with my back. When I stood, my shoulders and waist were at a tilt and I leaned to the side. As this worsened, they scheduled me with Dr. Eric Wall, an orthopedic surgeon who specialized in scoliosis. My scoliosis was still minor at the time, but quickly progressed to a concerning Cobb angle of 30 degrees. Dr. Wall recommended a treatment program that included assessment and treatment by a neurologist, chiropractic care and physical therapy. Over the next couple of years, the curve increased to 40 degrees and Dr. Wall prescribed a back brace that I was required to wear 23 hours a day, 7 days a week. However, the angle of my spine continued to worsen to an alarming 47 degrees, which resulted in Dr. Wall presenting my case to a Medical Board. He prepared the family for surgery to insert a rod in my back, and stressed the importance of wearing the brace and to continue with the treatment program. While the brace caused me pain, discomfort and embarrassment, I followed his advice. Slowly, over the next 4 years, the curve reduced to 18 degrees where it now remains. It was due to Dr. Wall that I avoided a surgery that would have affected me for the remainder of my life.

As I reflect back on the experience of working with Dr. Wall, the fear I faced motivated my career choice to become an orthopedic surgeon. I aspire to specialize in scoliosis so that I in turn, can help children with similar experiences. My condition along with my strengths in science and math pointed me towards the medical field, and where I I also volunteer at the St. Joseph’s Orphanage to support children and participate in events. I relish the thought that I will one day become a doctor and join the respected and honored field of medicine.
