We have examined several opinion pieces in class. This kind of persuasive essay presents the reader with the author’s opinion. An effective piece of persuasive writing will aim at appealing to the beliefs and values of those who don’t agree with that particular position.

Not all opinion pieces use source material to validate the points being made, but when you bring in reputable source material you are giving your paper more authority.

Pathos: Emotional appeal

Logos: Logical appeal

Ethos: The authority to write on a topic

Kairos: Timing/relevance

The first paper, the Personal Narrative, focused on pathos. The Analysis focused on logos, on logically examining a topic. This paper will bring both pathos and logos into use, because you will need to combine personal or anecdotal evidence that appeals to a reader’s emotions with logical evidence found through research. Your research and your personal experience combined gives you the ethos, or authority to write on this topic.

For this paper, you will need to find three sources to support your position. It is preferable that these sources are not opinion based. However, if it’s the opinion of someone who has great authority on the topic you’re writing on, that is acceptable. If, for example, you’re writing about a legal issue, and you wish to use a quote or summarize an argument from a Supreme Court judge, that would be a valuable source.

If you’d like, you may write this as if you were responding directly to a newspaper article in a letter to the editor.Â

I wanted to make this paper based on immigration (I am an immigrant myself), social work (How social workers remove at times the children from their families rather than focusing on programs to build the family as a hole), or anything else along those lines. Reason being, is i had already submitted those topic options to my professor.
