In a Ch3-CH-CH2-C-CH2-CH3 with CH3 attached to the CH, with CH3 attached to the C and a Br attached to the C Why are the carbon atoms counted from left to right?

In a CH3-CH-CH2-C-CH3 with a Br attached to the CH and one attached to the C and a CH3 attached to the C why are the carbon atoms counted from right to left?

To me these seem like the should be counted the same way but one is counted from left to right and one from right to left. Why is that? What is the rule? Keep in mind that I am a new chemistry studen
