Compare the arguments in Mickey Mouse Monopoly to the concept of “The Smurfette Principle.” On the one hand, most of the Disney films center around a female character, which seems to challenge the idea of the Smurfette Principle. However, there are some similarities in the arguments in terms of the attributes of the female characters. Please make specific references to points made in Mickey Mouse Monopoly, “The Smurfette Principle,” and “Is the Smurfette Principle Still Around?”. You may also bring up the points made in the films “How Movies Teach Manhood” and/or “Toy Ads and Learning Gender.”

Jackson Katz, the speaker in the film Tough Guise and C.J. Pasco, the author of “Dude, You’re A Fag,” seem to agree with what your textbook says in the section “Backlash toward Atypical Men” (pgs. 172-176): that there is a narrow box that defines masculinity in the U.S. and that there is a backlash against men who don’t adopt the “tough guise.” What is the “tough guise”? Have you seen the “tough guise” in men you know? Do you know atypical men who don’t follow the gender prescriptions of masculinity? Are those men called names like “sissy” or “fag”?

According to your textbook, “Gender segregation and hostility toward the other sex are the most prominent features of childhood gender relations” (56). Because of gender segregation, we end up with two cultures: boy culture and girl culture. Using any of the materials in this module, explain the differences between the two cultures of childhood. Your essay should be a minimum of 350 words and should make specific references to things you learned in the module.
When using quotes paraphrases from any of the readings, be sure to include a citation. You are NOT permitted to use any sources outside of this module.
