Jackson Katz, the speaker in the film Tough Guise and C.J. Pasco, the author of “Dude, You’re A Fag,” seem to agree with what your textbook says in the section “Backlash toward Atypical Men” (pgs. 172-176): that there is a narrow box that defines masculinity in the U.S. and that there is a backlash against men who don’t adopt the “tough guise.” What is the “tough guise”? Have you seen the “tough guise” in men you know? Do you know atypical men who don’t follow the gender prescriptions of masculinity? Are those men called names like “sissy” or “fag”?

According to your textbook, “Gender segregation and hostility toward the other sex are the most prominent features of childhood gender relations” (56). Because of gender segregation, we end up with two cultures: boy culture and girl culture. Using any of the materials in this module, explain the differences between the two cultures of childhood. Your essay should be a minimum of 350 words and should make specific references to things you learned in the module.
