Assessment 2: Critical Analysis

Purpose
The purpose of this exercise is to develop your capacities for critical analysis of written and film texts, in the context of the unit?s focus on film history and historiography.

INSTRUCTIONS
The assignment is divided into TWO sections.

Section A Critical reading (750 words)
Select ONE of the required readings from weeks 2-8 (excluding the Vivian Sobchack essay ?What is Film History??).
Critically analyse your selected essay or chapter. Make sure to address the following:
* the primary thesis and key steps in argument ?
* how the author situates their work in relation to other scholarly literature ?
* the selection, use and interpretation of primary and secondary sources ?
* the use of theory and/or implicit theoretical assumptions ?
the style of writing and its relation to the author?s approach and argument. ?

Section B Film analysis (750 words) ?
Select a 5 minute (approx.) sequence from ONE film from weeks 2-8 (excluding the short sequences used for Assessment 1: Descriptive Exercise). ?Analyse your selected sequence from a historical perspective, focusing your analysis via ONE key concept or term (such as canon, reception, genre, classical Hollywood style, intermediality, etc). ?You should reference TWO (no more, no less) relevant essays or book chapters:

ONE reference may be a required reading (and it may be the one analysed in Section A).
ONE reference must be an independently researched essay/book chapter.

Include a brief bibliography at the end of Section B. Use MLA or Chicago 16th A style.?

1. Provides a critical analysis of the selected reading in Section A that addresses all required aspects; ?
2. Demonstrates in Section B an understanding of the different ways in which a film text may be historicised; ?

4. Uses clear, coherent, grammatically correct prose with proper spelling. ?
