Small scale research study: Assessment brief
Please read these notes in combination with the unit handbook. For the assessment in this unit, you will be provided with some qualitative data, and will be required to analyse this data and write up the results of your analysis as a report of a small scale study.
The assessment criteria are as follows and relate to the Learning Outcomes of the module:
The report must show
1. Critical evaluation of and reflection on published qualitative research (Unit Learning Outcome 4)
2. Understanding of the philosophical underpinnings of the qualitative approach chosen (Unit Learning Outcome 1 and 2)
3. Coherent analysis of data provided (Unit Learning Outcome 2 and 3)
4. Conclusions related to the impact of the research, including evaluation of the study, and reflexivity (Unit Learning Outcome 3)
Conducting the small scale study
The data
You can find the data file on Moodle. In this file is the data you need to analyse for your report, as well as some background information on its collection, which you will need for your Method section. It is common for the first author of a published paper to be different to the person who collected the data (for example, often the person who collected the data is a research assistant). It is therefore not necessary to highlight this in your report. However, it is appropriate to include details of the person who did collect the data (this information is included in the data file) in order to reflect fully on the research process.
