Gender Advertisement Analysis

Gender Advertisement Analysis

Please use correct spelling and grammar.
While this is not an English class, good writing is critical to expressing your ideas.

Find two print advertisements that advertise the same type of product where one has a woman as the product representative and one has a man as the product representative (must use print ads only). (For example: cigarettes, shoes, liquor, cars, cologne, etc.). Use current ads, not ads that are examples from over 5 years ago. The ads do not have to be the same brand, just the same type of product. Attach the ads you select WITH A STAPLE to your paper. Please cite any and all sources used for this assignment, including your sources of your selected advertisements. The purpose of this paper is for you to demonstrate your ability to identify and analyze details from advertisements in terms of gender and gender norms.
In a well-formulated paper address the following questions:
1. (30 points) Based on your ads, describe how the women are represented. Analyze each detail of your advertisement. Do you see female gender stereotypes, or an alternative? What do these ads tell you about how women are supposed to behave, think, look? Don’t focus solely on physical appearance but also analyze the text (font, size, colors, wording), the color schemes, props, and so on as well.
2. ( 30 points) Based on your ads, describe how the men are represented. Analyze each detail of your advertisement. Do you see male gender stereotypes, or an alternative? What do these ads tell you about how men are supposed to behave, think, look? Don’t focus solely on physical appearance but also analyze the text (font, size, colors, wording), the color schemes, props, and so on as well.
3. (15 points) Use at least one of Kilbourne’s findings (Killing us Softly 4 video) in your analysis to discuss potential impact that these ads have on our ideas about how men and women should behave, look, think, etc. Connect her findings to your own.
4. (15 points) How are these representations of men and women problematic from a sociological standpoint? Why is it important to examine them in this way?
5. (10 points) Give at least one example of how these images have affected you personally. E.g. you might consider how recurring patterns of images influence: how you feel about yourself; interactions between men and women; relationships etc.
