Geographic Information System

You are trying tobuild a playground in Manhattan. You are not targeting all children, but a specific set of children based on geographic location. You are sympathetic towards public schools, plus the UFT has offered you money for this project, with the caveat that this playground should better serve children who attend public school. For the purpose of this exercise we are going to draw a shallow buffer (2 city blocks) 528 feet around both public and private schools.

Your task is to find areas in Manhattan that are within two blocks or 528 feet of public schools, but at least two blocks or 528 feet from private schools.

The area you need to build your playground on should also be between 20,000 and 35,000 square feet

Tasks

  1. Find Public and Private Schools in Manhattan
  2. Draw Buffers for Public and Private Schools
  3. Find the areas that are within the public school boundaries, but outside the private school buffers
  4. Calculate area for each of these pieces
  5. Save those areas that fit into our area criteria

Tools you will use:

  1. Dissolve
  2. Clip
  3. Buffer
  4. Union
  5. Multipart-Singlepart
  6. Field Calculator – Area

Layers you will need: (Please find this in the geo-database we used in the tutorial)

  1. A_schools_public
  2. A_schools_public
  3. A_pumas2010

Trouble Shooting:

PLEASE DISSOLVE ALL OF YOUR BUFFERS!!!!

When you create a new field please remember to make the output field in a decimal.

Final Answer

  1. Snip a copy of the areas that meet the criteria explained above
  2. Snip a copy of the table of your final answer
  3. Answer the following questions: What community districts are these areas located in?

What should you include in your submission?

  1. A snip of your final answer
  2. A step by step explanation of how you achieved this solution, all the way from data acquisition to the final image.

Please set up your explanation like this:

Step 1:

  1. The GIS tool you used (If you used one)
  2. The file you used or acquired (where did you get it? What is the name of it?)
  • Explain what you did with the file/tool

  1. If you ran into dead end, explain where you got stuck and what unsuccessful steps you used to reach the solution.
