Geography mapping lab

You should have drawn your contours with a 1’ contour interval. Using the contours:

  1. Locate and label all ridge lines and valleys.
  2. Place on the map all 3 types of scale.
  3. Where is the maximum gradient on the map? What is the

gradient in percent? Where is the maximum gradient in your

    section? What is the gradient?

  4. Draw cross sections along the line A-A, B-B, and C-C
  5. Determine the maximum flow that each of the drive lanes can

carry using the equation in the book (pg 276). To determine the velocity, use the equation 𝑉 = 74.5 ∗ ( 𝑤∗𝑑)0.66 ∗ √𝑆 where S is

    the gradient of the driveway.

  6. If the drives were only half full, what would the velocity be? 1⁄4

full? 3⁄4 full? What can you say about the relationship between

    water depth and velocity?

  7. What do you notice different about the contours in the different

    drive lanes?

  8. What does this tell you about how the water will flow?
  9. If 1⁄4” of rain falls (i.e., the whole area on your map is covered with

1⁄4” of water), where will the water go?

  10. How much will go to each area?
  11. Label the areas of pavement, building, plants.
  12. What is the average albedo for the whole area? For your

    section?
