THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
In this assignment, you will investigate the importance of microorganisms to the function of our world and report your findings back to the class.
(1) Choose one of the microorganisms from the following list, each group should research a different microorganism:
Cyanobacteria
Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Escherichia coli
Rhizobia
(2) Describe the organism (i.e. structure, growth and energy requirements)
(3) Imagine that a chemical company has developed a compound (compound X) which will remove the organism completely from our environment. Then do a literature search to answer the following questions.
What would the world be like?
What problems might we face?
Could we solve these problems?
What would the potential solutions cost?
Would you recommend the eradication?
BE SURE TO EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWERS!
(4) Prepare an audio visual report to share with the class on the Discussion Board. Your presentation should be approximately 10-15 minutes and include contributions from each group member.
(5) Cite all references using the following guide:
PRIMARY CITATIONS: Original research articles in scholarly journals.
SECONDARY SOURCES: Books or edited volumes which use primary sources (e.g. textbooks).
Websites: Generally not peer-reviewed and thus not primary or secondary literature unless they are an on-line version of the original research journal.
When using the idea in your text, cite the source using the last name of the author(s) and the publication year in parentheses.
Example: … (Wilkes 2005)…
If you use the author(s) name(s) as part of your sentence, include the publication year only in parentheses:
Example: Wilkes (2005)…..
For citations with more than two authors, use only the first author’s name and et al.
Example: (Wilkes et al. 2010)
(6) Include a Literature Cited section at the end of your presentation. The following are examples of citations from a journal article, book and website.
