Issue: Analyze the election and discuss the importance of voting.
Question: Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 requires that certain states receive pre-clearance before making changes to their election laws. In other words, these states must receive approval from the federal government before making any substantial changes to their election laws. Section 4 of this law provides the formula. Analyze the formula established in section 4 (which was declared unconstitutional in the Shelby County vs. Holder 2013) of the Voting Rights Act. Did the formula established by section four place an unfair restriction on these states. How do you believe that the Shelby County v. Holder decision affected our ability to vote?
