Write a five-page paper on the following topic. Below you will find a Guercino’s 1619 painting of The Resurrection of Lazarus (a subject often also referred to as “The Raising of Lazarus.”) Compare the painting to the description of the story as summarized here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raising_of_Lazarus (Links to an external site.) and to the biblical narrative here: https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=John+11&version=NIV (Links to an external site.)
Devote the first three pages of your paper to describing the painting in detail, both formally and with an eye to what episode, and within it which elements of the biblical narrative, Guercino decides to illustrate and/or emphasize, and which elements he leaves out, if any. Also discuss Guercino’s stylistic choices; how do those stylistic choices inform or transform our perception of the subject matter.
For the last two pages of the paper, compare Guercino’s painting to Caravaggio’s treatment of the same subject, comparing and contrasting their narrative and stylistic choices.
