Make-Up Museum Assignment
Please choose one of the following topics to write a short write up (no less than 1 page, no more than 3 pages) to be turned in no later than December 21. I have supplied a few questions to consider but most importantly your write-up should show that you have looked at building and took some time to consider its aesthetic, its placement in New York and how it relates to content we have discussed in class. You must provide proof that you visited the site of your choice and include it with your final project (e.g. a brochure, a selfie, a ticket stub, etc.). You can include this as an attachment if you submit your assignment via email or copy and paste an image of it to your paper.
1. Visit Federal Hall National Memorial at 26 Wall Street. This building, a prime example of Classical architecture in America, has an external façade that is nearly an exact copy of the Athenian Parthenon but an internal dome, which harkens to the architecture of the Roman Pantheon. Do you think these two elements, i.e. Greek and Roman, were harmoniously incorporated into this single building? What is the significance of using this type of architecture for a political building in the United States? Does Federal Hall share more with the Parthenon than just its outer shell or the Pantheon than just its dome? What are your impressions of the building as you circumnavigate it? How does it fit into its environment? What is lacking from the architecture vis-à-vis the Parthenon or Pantheon?
2. Visit a Neo-Gothic or Neo-Romanesque church or building. What features and/or concepts of Gothic or Romanesque architecture are clearly visible? Which elements are absent and why might they not be present? How does the church fit in to its environment? (you might want to consider this in light of how the cathedral of Amiens fits into its “natural” environment). When was this building built? Why do you suppose the architect/planners of this church chose this particular style? (No matter which part of the city you live in, you should be able to find a building in a Neo-Gothic or Neo-Romanesque style).
