In the 2008 documentary, Sick Around The World the focus was on the debate over health care, what might the

the urgent choices needed to reform health care in the U.S.? Access FRONTLINE Documentary at
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/sickaroundtheworld/view/main.html and watch the listed video
segments:

In 2012, as Congress continued to battle the U.S. budget deficit, policy-makers turned their attention to one of the
largest driving forces behind the nation’s debt – government health care spending, much of it encouraged by what
other countries were doing. Access NEED TO KNOW: Money and Medicine at
http://www.pbs.org/video/2283573727/ and watch the video. The focus of health care reform shifts from access
to care to cost of care, and studies suggested that a third of all health care expenditures were unnecessary.
Access The Good News in American Medicine at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tchd5wBTsOQ or
http://www.pbs.org/video/2198039605/ and watch the video. Doctors and hospitals all over the U.S. are finding
ways to cut health care costs while still providing excellent care through several low-cost, high-quality regions in
the U.S. So why cannot we not apply this nationwide?
It is now 2017, and the same debate over health care continues, what might the United States learn from the
successes and failures of other democracies? How does the U.S. healthcare system compare to health systems of
other high-income countries, and how has it fared over time? Access Animated Video: Health of the Healthcare
System at http://www.healthsystemtracker.org/health-of-the-healthcare-system/ and access and listen to audio:

After viewing all of the videos/audio/resources listed above to gain an in-depth understanding
of some of the key issues faced over the past 7 years in health care delivery and how other
countries have approached health care delivery write a report addressing the following:
1) What are the strengths (best points of a system) and weaknesses (problems of a system) of
the different health care delivery systems you have reviewed above (including the U.S.)?
2) How is health insurance and care managed in the different countries reviewed
above
(including the U.S.)?
3) How are health care services paid for in the different countries reviewed above (including the
U.S.)?
4) What percent of each country’s Gross Domestic Product is spent on health care?
5) Looking at how much health care cost across many countries, why do you think delivering
health care in the United States cost so much?
Prepare a written 4-5 page report addressing all of the questions above. If a source other than a
link or source listed above needs to be cited, it should be listed at the end of the paper. Any
statistics or facts need to have a source referenced. The body of the paper is to be double
spaced with one inch margins using a 12-point font. The 4-5 page requirement refers to the
body of the paper, a separate title page and reference page should be used and do not count
towards the page requirement. Use general APA style, no abstract needed.
