History essay on Trump’s Cabinet

History essay on Trump’s Cabinet

The executive branch is much larger than the office of the president: it is a large institution, including the White House Staff (including the Chief of Staff) and the Cabinet (which is comprised of the heads of Cabinet agencies, like the Departments of Homeland Security, Education, Health and Human Services, etc.) Beyond the Cabinet, there are additional regulatory agencies (like the Food and Drug Administration) and federal corporations (like the U.S. postal service). These agencies all operate under the authority of the executive branch: this is the executive bureaucracy.

This assignment is about Trump’s cabinet. The Cabinet heads nominated by Trump must be confirmed by the Senate; some nominations and hearings are on-going. You can see a list of Cabinet members and nominees and a bit of information about them here (The information on this website is about 2 months out of date – Pompeo and Haspel have both been confirmed):

Pick one Cabinet agency of particular interest to you from this chart and find two NEWS articles about this cabinet member. Then find two OPINION pieces about this member’s and his or her performance (one favorable and one critical). You need to consult at least three sources from the following list:

The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, The National Review, Politico, The Hill, The Christian Science Monitor, CNN.com, Huffington Post or Fox News.

Then write 2-3 paragraphs discussing the performance of this cabinet head. What did you learn about the political process and/or the executive branch? Include the URLs for the articles you use.
