PART ONE: USING PRIMARY SOURCE CHAPTER 17
Write a criticism of the impact of the Industrial Revolution on everyday life in Britain, including in your criticism a clear indication of the people and groups who you believe experienced negative effects of industrialization. You must list six pieces of evidence (noting specific written passages or specific details from pictures) from at least five of the sources, three of which must be written sources.

Source 18.2, with the theme “Seeking Western Education,” features the “Letter to Lord Amherst,” written by Ram Mohan Roy in 1823. This is a period when the influence of the British East India Company over India was growing, but the country of Britain had not yet made India its colony. Ram Mohan Roy came from a Brahmin (upper-caste) family and worked for the British East India Company.
Source 18.3, with the theme “The Indian Rebellion,” features the “Azamgarh Proclamation” allegedly written by Prince Feroze Shah, the grandson of the last Mughal Emperor, Bahadur Shah, in 1857. This took place during the Mutiny of 1857-58, when both Muslim and Hindu Indians revolted against the British East India Company’s expanding dominance over India. Britain put down the revolt and extended formal colonial rule over India, but this source was written in the heat of the rebellion before that future was yet known.
Source 18.4, with the theme “The Credits and Debits of British Rule in India,” was written by Dadabhai Naoroji, entitled “Speech to a London Audience,” in 1871. This is a speech Naoroji, a well-educated Indian intellectual and politician, gave to an English audience in London. At this time, Britain had been formally ruling India for 13 years.
Source 18.5, entitled “Gandhi on Modern Civilization,” features a 1909 pamphlet entitled “Indian Home Rule,” by Mahatma Gandhi, who would later lead India to independence.
Your Assignment
You must complete five tasks for this homework assignment.
1) Comparisons: Identify one topic or area (education, social reform, taxation, industry, etc) where two or more sources agree in their perspectives on the impact of British influence and rule on India (whether positive or negative). First, note the common topic, and then note one short quotation / passage from each source that shows the similar perspective, followed by your own interpretation connecting each quotations / passages to the topic.
2) Contrasts: Identify one topic or area (education, social reform, taxation, industry, etc) where two or more sources disagree in their perspectives on the impact of British influence and rule on India (whether positive or negative). First, note the common topic, and then note one short quotation / passage from each sources that shows the differing perspectives, followed by your own interpretation connecting each quotations / passages to the topic.
3) Influence of the Time Period: Choose two of the sources, and for each, indicate how the time period shaped the perspective in the source. Keep in mind what was happening between Britain and India at the time the source was written – growing company influence, rebellion, formal British rule, etc.
4) Influence of the Writer’s Background: Choose two of the sources, and for each, indicate how the background of the writer (religion, employment, education, etc) possibly shaped their perspectives.
5) Favorite Quote: Indicate your favorite quote from all four sources, with a two sentence explanation as to why you liked it.
